CLAYTON, NC — Vera Johnson (80), the beloved heart of her family and a pillar of her community, transitioned peacefully to her eternal rest on Friday, April 17, 2026, at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Vera was a woman of vibrant spirit and immense grace. She was famously known for her cooking; no family gathering was complete without her legendary hush puppies, potato salad, or her famous sweet potato pies. When she wasn't in the kitchen, she could be found at the center of the dance floor, where her effortless swing dancing was a sight to behold. A passionate sports fan, Vera never missed a chance to cheer on Stephen Curry, and she spent many happy afternoons with her favorite "soaps," especially The Young and the Restless. She was also a dedicated fan of The Godfather films; her family often recalls her favorite line with a smile: "Leave the gun, take the cannoli." She also found great joy in the companionship of her beloved dog, Zoey, who preceded her in death.
Vera’s life was anchored by her 45-year marriage to her devoted husband, Oliver. In a final tribute to his wife, Oliver shares: "I want you to know how much I will miss you and love you. You are going to be so deeply missed in this family and by all that you mean to us. You will be truly missed."
Vera spent her life ensuring every branch of her family tree was nurtured with strength and pride. She was a constant source of encouragement and love for her five grandchildren (Diondrey, Juston, Carlton, Xavier, and Tiffany) who proudly remember her simply as "the best." She took immense joy in seeing the greatness in her children Baron, Tiffanye, Kecia, and Ikira. Her faith was her compass, and she was a long-time member of New Trinity Missionary Baptist Church where she lived by the belief that "love remains."
Vera is now reunited in glory with her parents, her sister Rose, her brother Bill ("Daddy Boy"), and her faithful dog, Zoey.
